Linda Garcia, a business consultant based in Ashford in her early 60s, rediscovered cycling during the pandemic.
Linda said: “I picked up my bike again during Covid and discovered the world of biking in and around Ashford and the surrounding countryside. As there was so little traffic on the roads at the time, it was a pleasure to be able to properly explore the town. I was surprised by how good the local infrastructure of cycle paths was.”
What started as a way for Linda to use her daily exercise allowance soon became a lasting habit. While her daily routine hasn’t dramatically changed, she will often choose the bike over the car if her schedule allows - helping to reduce her carbon footprint, ease traffic and make greener choices.
Where possible, Linda favours Ashford’s quieter network of footpaths and cycle routes, avoiding busy roads and making the most of green spaces, reducing exposure to traffic emissions and noise. She has also noticed clear physical and mental benefits to increasing her cycling partnered with lots of walking.
“Cycling boosts my energy levels and gives me valuable time away from phones and screens. It’s a great way to escape the humdrum of everyday life.”
Although she drives a fuel-efficient car and doesn’t see cycling primarily as a cost-saving measure, she appreciates the flexibility it gives her compared to bus timetables that don’t fit around her schedule.
Some of her favourite cycle routes include the path along the River Stour behind the council buildings and Stour Centre, especially through the park with its wooden carved statues. She also describes the route through Victoria Park and out to Singleton Lakes as a “fantastic discovery.” Beyond town, she and her husband enjoy countryside rides along narrower lanes, often combining a cycle with a café or pub stop.
Her advice to anyone considering getting back on a bike is simple. “Find a second-hand bike that’s really good value online and just start! Even if it’s only 15 or 20 minutes on a flat route. It’s about taking small steps and finding the enjoyment.”
Linda’s story shows how cycling in Ashford can be accessible, enjoyable and a great way to support both wellbeing and an active lifestyle.
