Lloyd Starley and The Huddle

The Huddle is a growing community group supporting men’s wellbeing in Ashford. It was founded by Lloyd Starley during a particularly challenging time in his own life.

Lloyd, said: “One sleepless night at 3am, in the middle of a difficult period professionally, I realised that although things were tough, I still had my family, friends and children around me. That meant that I was okay. But it made me think about those that don’t have that support network around them and may not know where to turn.

“From that moment, I decided to create a space where men could come together, talk and support one another. The fact we’ve reached as many members as we have already, with people returning time after time, shows we are on the right lines.” The group was designed to be open and accessible to all adult men, regardless of background or circumstances. There is no cost to attend, no obligation and no formal sign-up process, removing barriers and making it as easy as possible for people to come along.

One of the latest ideas to emerge from the group is a cycling event. The suggestion came from members themselves, many of them keen cyclists who regularly take part in charity and recreational rides. The event aims to bring people together through a shared interest while promoting health, wellbeing and connection. Lloyd believes cycling can be particularly effective in helping people feel more comfortable joining a group, as it provides a natural focus while encouraging conversation and social interaction.

“The Huddle has some very keen and able cyclists who came to me with the idea of supporting a cycling event. There are endless positive links between exercise and mental wellbeing, but it’s also about meeting new people and being part of something where you feel you belong and are supported. Those that are shy, anxious or unsure can focus on the cycling and let the rest come naturally.”

The event itself is being planned with inclusivity in mind, with rides to suit different levels of experience. There will be a longer-distance ride for more experienced road cyclists, as well as an introductory ride where fitness levels and equipment are far less important and the focus is on enjoyment and engagement. This reflects the wider philosophy of The Huddle, which aims to create a relaxed and welcoming environment for everyone who takes part.

Looking ahead, Lloyd hopes cycling will become a regular part of The Huddle’s activities, with a number of events planned each year across different areas, distances and abilities. The aim is to ensure there is something for everyone within the group. For those who are not interested in cycling, there will still be opportunities to get involved, with people welcome to come along for a coffee and a social catch-up at meeting points along the route. This also provides an opportunity to support local coffee houses and businesses while bringing the wider group together.
